I'm using Google Earth as a reference for a project I'm working on currently and discovered that some historic maps have been included in the default settings if you dig far enough. They've stretched these maps, in this case an 1833 US map as a giant eagle, across the globe which you can navigate and turn, same as always.
It's interesting to see historical documents in modern ways but particularly when you can experience it simultaneously with three-dimensional terrain, current roadmaps, and models of current architecture!
